Level 33 Moves Ahead on High-End Wollongong Tower

Turner architects designed the new development across from the stadium at Wollongong replacing the Chicko's store

Developer Level 33 is moving ahead with a 14-storey shoptop tower opposite the WIN Stadium and Entertainment Centre in Wollongong on the Chicko’s Chicken site.

The 21-apartment project designed by Turner includes a full-floor penthouse and two sub-penthouses at 13 Crown Street, formerly known as 44 Harbour Street.

The Sydney-based developer won approval from the Wollongong City Council in December 2023 and was the approved for modifications this year.

It featured a double-height retail podium with space for amenities and was expected to be completed in 2026.

This would replace the well-known Chicko’s fast food store, and the Southern Crepes store before it, at the 1015sq m corner site that otherwise was largely vacant.

The family-owned developer and builder was also planning a 19-storey development with 262 apartments nearby at 357 and 363-373 Crown Street, Wollongong.

The Bunnings Warehouse Wollongong was Level 33’s next anticipated project in the region after picking up the 2.73ha site for $40 million this year.

The move came as building approvals for the region jumped 11.8 per cent above the five-year average to 1412 homes for the 2022-23 financial year, according to NSW Government data.

Turner senior interior project designer Minda Muhana said the design drew inspiration from Wollongong’s natural beauty while giving a nod to the nearby Flagstaff Point lighthouse.

“Easterly really caters to Wollongong’s diverse and evolving demographics from downsizers to young professionals,” Muhana said.

“We were inspired by the local landscape—from the warmth of the sand through to the cool tones of the ocean.”
