Each award is presented to the individual, not the company. It recognises the leadership, judgement and contribution that person has made to both their organisation and the broader industry.

With eighteen categories spanning every major discipline in property, the awards recognise excellence wherever it exists across the development lifecycle.

What are the judges looking for?

Every submission is assessed using the same judging framework, regardless of category.

The independent jury evaluates entrants across six core criteria:

• Leadership — How has the applicant led people, projects or organisations?

• Growth — What measurable impact have they created for their business or the industry?

• Innovation — Have they challenged convention or introduced better ways of working?

• Responsibility — How have they demonstrated integrity, stewardship and positive community impact?

• Bravery — Have they shown courage through difficult decisions, leadership or market conviction?

• Distinction (X-Factor) — What sets them apart from their peers?

The strongest submissions combine measurable achievements with compelling evidence of leadership and influence beyond individual projects.

Developer Leadership Awards

These categories recognise the people responsible for creating and delivering Australia’s cities.

Developer of the Year

Recognising senior leaders who own or lead property development businesses and have demonstrated exceptional commercial success, leadership and industry impact.

Open to owners, directors, executives and development leaders working within Australian development and investment businesses.

Young Developer of the Year (40 & Under)

Celebrating the next generation of development leaders who are already shaping businesses, projects and markets before the age of 40.

Judges will be looking for evidence of leadership well beyond years of experience.

Future Leader Award (35 & Under)

Open to emerging leaders working anywhere across the built environment.

Unlike the developer-specific categories, this award recognises exceptional young professionals across every discipline—from planning and engineering through to finance, design, technology and construction.

Leadership exists well beyond development businesses.

These categories celebrate people creating positive change across industry and community.

Women’s Leadership Award (40 & Under)

Recognising outstanding emerging women leaders making a significant contribution across any discipline within the built environment.

Women’s Leadership Award (41 & Above)

Celebrating established women whose leadership has influenced projects, organisations and the broader industry over many years.

Community Leadership Award

Honouring leaders working within charities, not-for-profits, community housing providers and other organisations delivering meaningful community outcomes.

Government Leadership Award

Recognising exceptional leadership across government, planning authorities, public agencies and civic administration that has positively influenced Australia’s cities and communities.

Professional Excellence Awards

The Urban Leader Awards also recognise leadership across the specialist disciplines that make development possible.

Being recognised as an Urban Leader extends well beyond a single evening.

Finalists and winners receive national recognition through The Urban Developer, reaching an audience of more than 80,000 property professionals, while the award itself remains with the individual throughout their career—not the organisation they work for.

Importantly, a nomination also recognises the teams behind every leader.
