Woolworths Unpacks Plans for Rising Bendigo Growth Spot

Woolworths Group has unpacked plans for a full-line supermarket and retail precinct in a rising Bendigo suburb. 

In the supermarket giant's sights is a amalgamated site consisting of three parcels at 17-23 Apsley Street, 19-23 Apsley Lane and 39 Blucher Street at Strathfieldsaye.

Blucher Street site is home to a bus depot, while the other blocks are vacant.

The 1.46ha site at the Strathfieldsaye Town Centre is about 10km south-east of central Bendigo. It is 400m from the nearest supermarket, the Strathfieldsaye IGA, as well as childcare centres, a school and a service station.

Under plans now before the  Victorian Department of Transport and Planning, a a supermarket with a gross floor area of 3580sq m woulf be developed as well as four speciality tenancies with a collective GFA of 924 square metres. 

The development is expected to generate 643 direct and indirect jobs, according to the application.

Also proposed is new infrastructure, including two connections to Apsley Lane, as well as a 191-space carpark comprising 181 standard spaces, 6 direct-to-boot spaces and 4 all-access spaces.

Meanwhile, Woolworths has reported in its quarterly results for the three months to April 2026 that group sales increased 4.5 per cent to $18.1 billion  on the same quarter of the previous year. 

Investors interest in the sector remains robust with major international player Forest Endeavour, a vehicle of the billionaire Lin family of Taiwan, paying $500 million for 10 Woolworths supermarkets this year.
