Conflict, Construction Costs Squeeze Housing Accord Gains

Australia’s housing system was on the verge of its best news in years, but the Middle East conflict has changed everything.

Now, global supply chain disruption has again emerged as a real threat to the delivery of tens of thousands of homes.

The National Housing Supply and Affordability Council’s (NHSAC) State of the Housing System 2026 report, released at the Property Council’s National Housing Solutions Summit in Melbourne on April 30, estimates about 980,000 new homes were expected by June 30, 2029, before the conflict. 

That was an increase of 42,000 homes on the previous year’s forecast.
