Revealed: Amazon Behind $1bn Robotic Shed Plan for Sydney’s West
Amazon has been revealed as being behind plans for a $1.078-billion warehouse in the Aerotropolis now on exhibition.
The site is on the eastern fringe of the Western Sydney International Airport.
The Urban Developer can confirm the global e-commerce behemoth is the proponent of the automated distribution centre proposed for 475 Badgery’s Creek Road.
The site of 17.2ha was acquired from the Ingham Property Group.
According to the application, which lists Urbis as proponent, the shed of 195,829sq m of gross floor area will be “highly automated” and “harness leading edge technology to drive supply chain efficiencies”.
In addition to the warehouse floor, the project would include a 2782sq m print-on-demand facility, a 2008sq m dangerous goods space and 252sq m of offices.
Despite the reliance on robotics, up to 807 ongoing jobs would be created by the warehouse. Amazon said that it had invested $2 billion in Western Sydney since 2018, creating 4000 jobs. Fulfilment centre roles do not require qualifications or experience, with all necessary training provided, the company said.
Amazon also operates logistics and distribution assets at Moorebank, Regents Park and Horsley Park. Another automated site at Kemps Creek opened in 2022,and a second Horsley park facility is due to open later this year.
Top-level connections for utilities will be handled through Ingham’s 182.4ha masterplanned estate, which will also hold ALDI’s $1-billion, 87,000sq m distribution centre approved in March.
Poultry giant Ingham plans a 120MW substation through Endeavour Energy to service the chicken farm-turned-industrial precinct, plus up to 70MW of rooftop solar and 120MWh on-site battery storage capacity.
The company is marketing leases from 5000 to 100,000sq m of industrial space, with up to a million square metres on offer.
